Volunteers are an essential part of the Catherine McAuley Center’s operations. They assist in many areas and help to support and sustain the mission of the Center. It is the policy of the Center to welcome the services of volunteers who are generous enough to donate their time and willing to abide by the Center’s policies. Our volunteer program is designed to match individuals to a particular area of the Center’s services and activities.

Volunteers perform a wide range of needed services at both the Catherine McAuley Center administrative office in Scranton and at one of our shelters/transitional housing sites. Examples of services include child care; clean-up and maintenance; raking, weeding, and landscaping; painting and basic home repairs; general office work; answering and referring phone inquiries; food pantry and furniture bank; and moving and transportation. Many volunteer groups conduct a donation drive on behalf of the Center to collect needed items on our wish list.

The Catherine McAuley Center hosts special events for the homeless women and children we serve in celebration of holidays throughout the year. Examples include a Halloween/Fall Festival; Christmas Party; Easter Egg Hunt and Celebration; and a Mother’s Day Tea. A particular volunteer group may select one of these events and help to coordinate all the associated activities and refreshments.

Since volunteers represent the mission and philosophy of the Catherine McAuley Center, it is important for volunteers to remain courteous, respectful, and compassionate. All volunteers must adhere to the Center’s policy on confidentiality.

Volunteer assignments are made without regard to race, religion, or gender. Volunteers who are handicapped or who have special needs can be placed in an appropriate setting. Student volunteers are accepted on the same basis as adults. However, an individual or group of volunteers under the age of 18 needs the permission of a parent or guardian when applying. Volunteers who work with children on an ongoing basis will be required to obtain a Child Abuse Clearance and References.
